Originally a working cat, the Maine Coon is solid, rugged, and can endure a harsh climate. A distinctive characteristic is its smooth, shaggy coat. With an essentially amiable disposition, it has adapted to varied environments.
The Maine Coon is the native American longhaired cat and was recognized as a specific breed in Maine where they were held in high regard for their mousing talents. Through nature's own breeding program, this breed has developed into a sturdy cat ideally suited to the harsh winters and varied seasons of the region. The Maine Coon has always been admired for its beauty, and a Maine Coon was chosen Best Cat at the first major cat show ever held in this country.

"I'm used to finding the Russians on top of the kitchen cabinents....but a 20lb+ Maine Coon is altogether another story!"
"The Maine Coons that I have shared my life with have been the smartest of any cat I have ever owned. They would figure out how to do something, long before any of my Abyssinians ever did. They are sweet, loving and a joy to have around ... and very heavy when sitting on your lap!"
